Elias Baier is a devout young seminarian with the “Work of Jesus the High Priest,” an international missionary group. Born on April 25, 2001, in Friedberg, Germany, he moved to Rome in 2019 to begin his journey toward priesthood, supported by international foundations like The Formation Foundation, which aids students globally in their spiritual path.
In his story shared with the Foundation, Elias recounts how the Virgin Mary profoundly transformed his life, guiding him to a faith-filled existence beyond his imagination.
Elias, the eldest child in his family, grew up in Mering, a small Bavarian town. Raised in a deeply Catholic household, he credits his faith largely to his parents. His early life was typical, marked by the birth of his siblings, Celine and Damian, and school, where he excelled in Math despite a general disinterest in academics.
His life took a turn when he joined the Catholic Scouts, an experience that Elias credits as pivotal to his current path. The Scouts provided him with a balance of fun, learning, and faith, including outdoor adventures, theatrical plays, and spiritual practices like daily Mass and Rosary. This period shaped his character and was instrumental in his decision to join the
seminary.
However, high school brought challenges. Elias’s grades dropped as he delved deeper into the world of computer games, leading to social isolation and a retreat into the virtual realm. It was a Scout trip to Rome that marked a turning point. Amidst a challenging hike to the city, he participated in a consecration to the Virgin Mary at “Santa Maria Maggiore.” This experience, despite initial struggles to maintain a daily prayer routine, eventually led him to pray the Rosary daily, a practice that initiated profound changes in his life.
Elias gradually formed a strong group of Catholic friends, quit gaming, and explored new interests like parkour, photography, and reading. The establishment of an adoration chapel in his parish further deepened his faith, leading him to regular Mass attendance and contemplation of a priestly vocation. He trusted God to guide him toward a path of true happiness, whether it involved marriage or priesthood.
Post-high school, Elias embarked on a gap year, exploring the United States and later working as a tinsmith. A transformative three-month mission trip to Uruguay with his community, despite language barriers, solidified his vocation. The authenticity of the Christian life he witnessed there, coupled with intense prayer, clarified his calling to the priesthood.
Before joining the seminary near Rome in September 2020, Elias undertook a challenging but providential 600 km hike from Munich to Venice. Now studying Philosophy at the University of the Holy Cross, he cherishes his diverse seminary community and remains grateful for every step of his journey, filled with God’s love and guidance. He especially thanks the Virgin Mary for leading him to where he is today, always feeling her close presence and guidance.
